Therapeutic footwear for preventing diabetic foot ulcers - G Jarl
Therapeutic
footwear is recommended as a means to prevent diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).
However, as the mechanisms by which footwear prevent DFU may not always be
clear, inappropriate footwear prescriptions occur. This result in low patient
adherence to using the footwear, and thereby higher risk of new foot ulcers.
This talk will analyze how different footwear features (pressure-distributing
insole, rocker bottom sole, etc.) intervene in the causal chain leading to
the development of DFUs. By this understanding, footwear prescription can be
more tailored-made and acceptable to patients. Patient cases will be used to
illustrate the approach in clinical practice. |
