The provision of recreational prostheses for people with limb loss
Abstract
Title: The provision of recreational prostheses for people with limb loss
Presenter: Kirsten Porter, Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK
Background
The biopsychosocial model acknowledges the complexity of factors affecting the experience of an individual with disability. The benefits of physical activity for many of these factors is well-established. A variety of prostheses and assistive devices can promote accessibility to sports and recreational activities, but in Wales are only routinely commissioned for people aged 25 years and under.
Aims
This audit aimed to determine whether the provision of recreational limbs is in line with the commissioning policy and to understand the activities for which they are being used.
Methods
Individuals were identified by searching the electronic patient record system for codes specific to the provision of recreational prostheses. Medical records were reviewed for demographic data and information pertaining to level and cause of amputation. Individuals were asked to complete a telephone survey about their use of the recreational prosthesis.
Results
Twenty-four individuals were identified and were between the ages of 5 and 28 years at the time of the audit. Fourteen completed the survey and of these, 12 regularly used their recreational prosthesis, with a mean use of 17hours per week. Activities identified consisted of team and individual sports as well as playground use and general exercise. Twelve of 14 surveyed believed the recreational prosthesis positively impacted their ability to participate in activity.
Conclusions
The provision of recreational prostheses complies with the commissioning policy in Wales. The majority of people who completed the survey felt that their prosthesis improved their activity and participation.
